So I am chatting with a buddy the other day about corn hole boards. For those of you who are not familiar with the term a corn hole board is basically an angled board with a hole in it. The object is to throw a sewn cloth sack packed with corn from a distance into the hole. I suppose cornhole sounds better than sackhole or holesack. This game can be played with two or four persons per sets of boards. The discussion comes up about the actual dimensions of the hole. How big and where to place it. Six inches is the winner. Come to find out there is actually a corn hole association that dictates the size of the board, hole and sac. Here is a link to the American Cornhole Associations website if you need the exact dimensions. https://www.playcornhole.org/pages/rules
There also is a standard for the type of corn you use. It states it has to be feed corn. So no planting corn I guess. I wonder if the different kinds of corn can effect the velocity of the bag like deflating football is said to do in some sort of national pro athlete game… Say I feed my chickens; Maize corn, sweet corn or Corn Nuts? This makes it feed corn. Does it matter if this corn is yellow, white or multi colored? How about the size of the kernel?Moisture in corn makes a serious difference in weight. So if my corn sack is filled with the required 14-16 ounces of properly dried corn what happens if the humidity goes up? Am I disqualified? Is there a weigh in at the beginning and throughout the tournament event? Maybe I could fit the required ounces of CornNuts into the sack. That way if I get hungry I could cut one open for a snack.
So our discussion was on what kind of paint to use. Glossy, flat, or maybe a polyurethane covering on top of some artwork. According to the corn hole assn. it has to be painted with a semi-gloss exterior latex paint resulting in a surface that allows bags to slide, but is not so slippery that it allows the bags to slide back down the board. So there is a standard to this. There seems to be some discretion on the making of the sacks though. Itv says they must be made from durable fabric. I am going to assume kevlar might slide different than cotton or polyester. I wonder if a combination of differing 33sx3cloth would give a different way the material slides or sticks.
I was thinking that it might be fun to secret a can of spray oil such as the type used in National Lampoons Christmas Vacation on that awesome sled ride. When the other side leaves for a beer and bathroom break ya spray it down to increase the speed of the bag across the board and see how long it takes to figure it out. I didn’t see anything in the rules specifically prohibiting it. Just for fun.
Anyway. My buddies boards turned out nicely. I think the N might be upside down though… CoRnHoLe well my friend…
